Overview

The Upper Mustang trek is undoubtedly one of the most special and popular trekking in the Mustang region of Nepal. With the aim to preserve its centuries-old culture and the pristine, unspoiled natural biodiversity of Mustang, the government of Nepal has designated the area as a ‘controlled’ region to promote sustainable tourism. This means that a very limited number of trekkers is allowed to enter Upper Mustang and trekkers are required to obtain Special Trekking Permit for the trekking purpose.

Upper Mustang lies in the shadow of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges, making it a superb destination to watch the Himalayan ranges including Dhaulagiri I (8167m), the seventh highest, and Annapurna I (8091m), the tenth-highest mountains in the world.

The Upper Mustang is a treasure house for rich Buddhist culture and lifestyle. The ancient kingdom of Lo, also called Lo Manthang, is a walled city remarkably known for its 16th-century monasteries, ruins of old forts, mani walls, caves, and murals, is also the residence of the King of Mustang who used to rule this kingdom well into the 21st century. The Upper Mustang trek is packed with adventure as we trace our steps along barren ridges, alpine meadows, deep canyons, bare cliffs and rocky moraines.

Today Upper Mustang is under visible pressure from expanding and building motorable roads. Nepal Environmental Treks & Expedition is very careful in designing packages in the Upper Mustang region, as we place high emphasis on promoting sustainable tourism in the remote area. Earlier trekking in Mustang Region used to be just camping but now both lodges and camping are possible. Being relatively moderate in grade, traveling in the region is suitable for all age groups of travelers.

We have a team of well-trained and highly experienced trekking guides and support assistants to make your journey into Upper Mustang a memorable one. We are a registered trekking agency with the Nepalese government, so we are authorized to obtain special trekking permits for our trekkers.

Itinerary

Arrive at Kathmandu

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, our airport representative will meet and welcome you. You will be greeted traditionally with flower garlands. The representative will then take you to your hotel where you will be served welcome drinks. In the afternoon, you can visit shops, restaurants, and bars.
Stay overnight at the hotel in Kathmandu.

City Tour of Kathmandu or Patan and Bhaktapur

On this day, you will visit famous world heritage monuments in Kathmandu including Kathmandu Durbar Square, Boudhanath, Swoyambhunath, and Pashupatinath. Alternatively, you can also choose Bhaktapur and Patan sightseeing. By late afternoon, you will drive back to your hotel.

Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara

After early morning breakfast, you will be picked up from the hotel and taken to the tourist bus station. The drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara (914m.) takes about seven hours. The drive will take most of our morning time, leaving much of the afternoon to get a warm glimpse of Pokhara Valley and its beauty. If you choose to fly, you can reach Pokhara in 25 minutes. There are several flights from morning to afternoon available from Kathmandu to Pokhara. You will spend the night at a hotel in Pokhara.

Drive from Pokhara to Muktinath

After early morning breakfast, drive from Pokhara to Muktinath (3795m) takes about 9 hrs. Muktinath is an ancient pilgrimage site revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. There is a belief that taking a bath from 108 water spouts helps one attain Moksha. Stay overnight at lodge.

Drive from Muktinath to Lomanthang

After breakfast, take a morning drive from Muktinath to Lo-Manthang (3730m) which takes about 9 hrs. En route, you can visit Ghar Gumba (Monastery). Stay overnight at a lodge.

Explore Lo-manthang

Free day to visit some ancient monasteries in the Lo-Manthang area. Explore Lo-Manthang palace, Jhampa and Thupchen monasteries, and fascinating caves at Chosar. Stay overnight at a lodge.

Drive from Lo-manthang to Jomsom

Early morning drive from Lo-Manthang to Jomsom (2700m) which takes about 8 hrs. Drive through Tibetan villages with beautiful views of hill and mountain peaks. Stay overnight at a lodge.

Drive from Jomsom to Pokhara

After early morning breakfast, drive from Jomsom to Pokhara which takes about 7 hrs. Drive along Kali Gandaki river observing forests, villages, and the world's deepest gorge. Stay overnight at hotel in Pokhara.

Drive from Pokhara to Jomsom

After breakfast early morning, drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu which takes about seven hours. En route, you will enjoy the mountain views, green sceneries, rice terrace fields, vegetable fields, and people being engaged in their daily life activities. If you choose to fly back to Kathmandu, it takes about 25 minutes. There are several flights from Kathmandu to Pokhara from morning to afternoon.
You will also be offered a traditional farewell dinner in Kathmandu.

Departure from Kathmandu

As per your flight schedule, our airport representative will transfer from your hotel to the airport for your final departure.
